The Golf Course Greens and Bunkers Renovation was top of mind in August with three workshops — one Board and two homeowner — to spread awareness of this large project’s many details, as well as gathering feedback from homeowners. After careful consideration of the alternatives, including cost of work, the financial impact of course closure, and other important golf membership and player experience factors, the Board voted to complete work on 18 holes during a course closure for seven months — April through October 2019. They did not select the alternative of working on nine holes in 2019, and nine holes in 2020.

This project has been years in the making and has been carefully thought out and managed by a talented team headed by volunteer homeowner John Selby, chairman of the Greens and Bunkers
Renovation Advisory Committee. He has worked closely with staff, Financial Manager Julie Elliott, Golf Course Superintendent Pat Shannon, Golf Pro John Rathbun, and the other committee members, including Board member Jay Carpenter.

Working alongside golf course experts — Golf Course Architect Andy Staples, Agronomist Fred Astrom and Irrigation Consultant Brent Harvey — the team proposed a plan for the new Greens and Bunkers Renovation, and the decision to close the course was made at the Aug. 28 Board meeting.

There is more work to be done in the next several months to finalize the scope of the project, contractor bidding and SDCEA business adjustments. The details will be shared with homeowners as steps in the process are finalized.

The original planners of San Diego Country Estates referred to the golf course as the “Crown Jewel,” and for many years homeowners and guests have experienced the benefit of living in a golf course community.

It is one of the many amenities that are available to homeowners, and while not all homeowners golf, all homeowners own the golf course as part of SDCEA. We look forward to restoring the course to its “CROWN JEWEL” status, creating a unique golf experience, and certainly enticing more homeowners, and their families, to play!
